Dr. Rachel Liu will provide an overview of cardiac POCUS applications from basic screening to advanced diagnostics, then explore the practical barriers clinicians face: infrastructure gaps, governance challenges, training requirements, and quality oversight. The session will examine how emerging AI-guided technologies, including FDA-approved/CE-marked solutions like HeartFocus, are addressing these barriers by reducing the technical skill threshold required for diagnostic imaging.

Dr. Rachel Liu, MBBChBAO, FACEP, is a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Yale School of Medicine. She is a recognized national and international leader in point of care ultrasound (POCUS), noted for her contributions in educational innovations such as SonoSlam® and SonoGames®, program administration and ultrasound IT workflow advancements including artificial intelligence.
At the Yale School of Medicine, Dr. Liu holds titles including Director of POCUS Education, within which she has implemented a longitudinal student training program integrating POCUS with basic science, physical examination, and clinical reasoning. Her program has trained hundreds of learners at all levels.
She has held leadership roles within major emergency medicine and ultrasound organizations such as the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships. Most recently, she contributed to the creation of the American Board of Emergency Medicine’s (ABEM) first Focused Practice Designation for certification in advanced emergency ultrasonography as well as its maintenance of certification activities. She has authored numerous scholarly works in the field, and co-edited the Ultrasound Program Management book which was released this past summer.
