Webinar:
Nephrology POCUS
November 11, 2026 | 12pm ET
Through this presentation, learners will develop the ability to perform a focused bedside renal ultrasound to accurately evaluate normal renal tract and pathologies. Patients with kidney disease may present with a wide range of comorbidities, which lends POCUS a special role. It requires training and practice, but any physician can incorporate it into their daily practice. This presentation will demonstrate how POCUS in nephrology allows rapid identification of structural or functional abnormalities, enabling more accurate volume assessment and supporting diagnosis, as well as guiding procedures.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the role of POCUS in nephrology and its application in the bedside evaluation of patients with acute and chronic kidney disease.
- Assess volume status and hemodynamic using inferior vena cava (IVC) ultrasound, lung ultrasound, and focused cardiac assessment.
- Perform a focused renal ultrasound to identify renal size, cortical echogenicity, hydronephrosis, and other relevant structural abnormalities.
- Recognize urinary tract obstruction by identifying hydronephrosis and assessing bladder distension and urinary retention
- Evaluate volume overload and pulmonary congestion using lung ultrasound, including the identification of B-lines and pleural effusions
- Integrate POCUS findings into clinical decision-making in acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and ease (CKD), and suspected cardiorenal syndrome.
- Assess dialysis-related concerns using focused ultrasound for volume assessment, vascular access evaluation where appropriate, and selected complications.
- Recognize the limitations of POCUS and identify situations requiring formal imaging, further investigations, or specialist consultation.
- Apply a systematic, structured POCUS approach to common nephrology clinical scenarios while understanding the importance of clinical correlation.
