The collaboration supports maternal-fetal care capacity in the Philippines through structured ultrasound training and validated clinician skill assessment

The Inteleos Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Certification Academy today announced a partnership with Life Matters International (LMI) to support standardized ultrasound education and competency validation for clinicians providing maternal care in the Philippines.

The partnership extends Inteleos’ broader efforts to address preventable maternal and fetal mortality through structured ultrasound training, assessment, and certification. In the Philippines, it is designed to build maternal-fetal care capacity through quality training and skill validation, pairing education in ultrasound fundamentals and obstetric applications with validated proficiency pathways for frontline clinicians.

Life Matters International is a Bay Area-based nonprofit focused on reducing preventable causes of maternal death as an initial step toward improving long-term family health outcomes globally. The organization identifies enhanced prenatal assessment through point-of-care ultrasound, maternal health education, and sustained local workforce development as central components of its care model in underserved settings.

In the Philippines, Life Matters International’s program is structured around repeat medical missions in target municipalities over a period exceeding one year, with each mission lasting one to two weeks and designed to align with local clinical realities. The model is intended to build sustainable maternal-fetal care capacity by equipping midwives and nurses with quality training, practical ultrasound skills, and validated competencies in settings affected by physician shortages.

Under the partnership, Life Matters International will incorporate the Inteleos POCUS Certification Academy Fundamentals and OB Essentials certifications at the culmination of its year-long training program. This creates a defined progression from foundational ultrasound knowledge to obstetric-specific application and formal external validation of clinician POCUS skills.

“Reducing maternal and fetal mortality requires more than access to technology; it requires clinically competent providers, objective standards, and durable pathways to proficiency,” said Jasmine Rockett, Inteleos POCUS Certification Academy Director. “This partnership with Life Matters International helps build maternal-fetal care capacity in the Philippines through quality training and rigorous skill validation, linking education to competency-based assessment for local providers.”

“Life Matters International is committed to building healthcare capacity by upskilling primary care midwives and nurses with imaging technology. We aim to reduce the number of women dying from preventable causes related to pregnancy in line with our vision of ‘No mother should die when giving life!’” said Stefan Haller, MD, Life Matters International Executive Director. “Validating our clinicians’ POCUS skills by adding certification to the rigorous training and clinical examinations they receive elevates the level of care mothers receive in the Philippines and helps establish a consistently higher clinical standard in the communities we serve.”

The partnership will launch with integration of the Inteleos POCUS Fundamentals and OB Essentials certifications into Life Matters International’s existing maternal health training model in the Philippines. The initial phase is intended to strengthen maternal-fetal care delivery by building local capacity through foundational knowledge acquisition, obstetric ultrasound skill development and application, and competency validation.
