Webinar:
What’s New in POCUS for Vascular Access in Anesthesia? Vessel Sizing for Safer Cannulation
May 27, 2026 | 12pm ET
This webinar will explore the latest advances in POCUS for vascular access in anesthesia. We will review how to obtain high-quality ultrasound views for peripheral and central veins, and how to systematically measure vessel diameter and depth before cannulation. Using real clinical examples, we will discuss how vessel sizing can guide catheter selection, optimize puncture site choice, and minimize complications such as failed cannulation, hematoma, arterial puncture, and thrombosis. Although focused on anesthesia practice, the concepts are applicable to any clinician performing ultrasound-guided vascular access, including intensivists, emergency physicians, and hospitalists interested in improving patient safety at the bedside.
Learning objectives:
- Describe key POCUS views and scanning techniques for ultrasound-guided peripheral and central venous access.
- Perform basic vessel sizing (diameter and depth) and use these measurements to choose the optimal catheter size and insertion site.
- Explain how a “measurement-first” POCUS approach can reduce vascular access complications and improve safety in anesthesia and other clinical settings.
