Philippine College of Chest Physicians and Inteleos POCUS Certification Academy Unite to Champion Safe, Effective Lung POCUS: A Joint Call for Validated Training and Certification
September 17, 2025
Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has rapidly emerged as a transformative tool in modern medicine, particularly in pulmonary care. Its ability to provide real-time, bedside imaging has revolutionized the assessment and management of respiratory conditions—enabling clinicians to make faster, more accurate diagnoses, guide interventions, and improve patient safety across diverse care settings.
The Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) and the Inteleos POCUS Certification Academy recognize the critical role of Lung POCUS in enhancing the quality and efficiency of pulmonary care. As national and global leaders in respiratory health and ultrasound standards, our organizations are aligned in a shared mission: to advance patient outcomes by promoting the safe, effective, and standardized use of Lung POCUS through validated education, skills development, and validation through certification.
This joint statement reflects our collaborative commitment to elevating Lung POCUS as a high-value diagnostic tool—one that must be supported by rigorous training and proficiency-based assessment to ensure excellence in patient care.
PCCP and Inteleos share the belief that Lung POCUS is a clinically essential tool that enhances diagnostic precision and supports timely clinical decision-making across emergency, inpatient, critical care, and outpatient settings. Safe and effective use of this tool requires structured training in ultrasound image acquisition, interpretation, and clinical integration.
Proficiency should be verified through external certification to ensure consistency, objectivity, and alignment with international standards of practice. The POCUS Certification Academy offers a structured certification pathway that includes foundational learning and comprehensive performance assessment. Ongoing professional development and recertification are essential to maintain proficiency and ensure long-term
quality and safety.
Collaborative Commitment to Education and Certification
To ensure the highest standard of Lung POCUS practice, PCCP and Inteleos are working in partnership to promote access to structured, validated training and certification for clinicians nationwide. PCCP recognizes the value of the Lung POCUS Certification Program developed by the POCUS Certification Academy as a globally aligned, proficiency -based pathway that meets international expectations for safe and effective ultrasound practice.
Achieving proficiency in Lung POCUS requires a clear educational trajectory. The Certification Program integrates:
- Self-paced online modules covering core ultrasound principles, lung pathology, image interpretation, and clinical decision-making
- A practical checklist and logbook for documenting a minimum of 20 supervised lung POCUS scans in real patient care
- A proficiency-based assessment process, which includes clinical case scenarios, peer evaluations, and video submissions
This model ensures that clinicians not only gain theoretical understanding but also demonstrate hands-on proficiency and sound clinical reasoning in patient-centered environments.
Through this collaboration, PCCP will help raise awareness of the certification opportunity among its members and encourage its integration into continuing professional development and institutional standards.
Institutional Impact and Integration
Validated certification supports clinical governance by providing hospitals, academic centers, and health systems with a trusted measure of clinician proficiency. We encourage institutions to integrate Lung POCUS certification into their privileging processes, quality assurance programs, and continuing medical education initiatives. This alignment enhances clinical accountability, improves consistency in care, and supports better
patient outcomes.
Lung POCUS is an increasingly vital diagnostic tool in pulmonary medicine. To unlock its full potential, clinicians must be equipped not only with access to technology but with the training, practice, and verification needed to use it safely and effectively.
This collaboration is rooted in a shared vision to improve lung health through clinical excellence and equitable access to high-quality care. Inteleos is committed to fueling the global health community by validating clinical proficiency and establishing international standards of excellence. PCCP’s mission is to advance lung health for Filipinos by optimizing expertise and resources to empower every Filipino toward better respiratory health. Together, we believe that rigorous, proficiency-based certification in Lung POCUS is essential to delivering safe, modern, and patient-centered pulmonary care.
