POCUS Specialty Certifications are awarded once the candidate has successfully passed the Clinical Case Assessments for each clinical area identified as appropriate for that certification and has completed a practical component that includes a peer evaluation and video submissions.

Currently, the POCUS Certification Academy is offering the following specialty certifications:


POCUS Generalist Certification:

The Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Generalist Certification tests and validates your knowledge in eight (8) specialty clinical areas and includes a practical component with peer evaluations and video submissions. The POCUS Generalist Certification is designed for healthcare professionals specializing in family medicine, primary care or general practice and who have already earned the POCUS Fundamentals Certificate.

This Certification can be earned by completing the assessments and earning the point-of-care ultrasound clinical Certifications for:

  • Lower Extremity Deep Venous Thrombus (DVT)
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
  • Cardiac
  • Musculoskeletal (MSK) and Soft Tissue

POCUS Emergency Medicine Certification:

The Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Emergency Medicine Certification assesses and verifies your point-of-care ultrasound knowledge in 7 specialty clinical areas and includes a practical component with peer evaluations and video submissions. The POCUS Emergency Medicine Certification is designed especially for emergency room medical staff, paramedics, military medical personnel, physicians working in the field and other first responders.

This Certification can be earned by completing the assessments and earning the point-of-care ultrasound clinical Certifications for:

  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)
  • Abdominal Trauma
  • Cardiac
  • Hepatobiliary/Spleen

Application Process

Prerequisites

Applicants for the POCUS Certification Academy must meet all program prerequisites:

  1. Possess an active Point-of-Care Ultrasound Certification Academy POCUS Fundamentals Certificate or have successfully completed the SPI Examination within the last five (5) years OR hold a current APCA™/ARDMS™ credential.  You can find more information on the Point-of-Care Ultrasound Certification Academy POCUS Fundamentals Certificate here.
  2. Be actively practicing and in good standing;
  3. Actively practicing in the clinical area(s); and
  4. Must have performed and participated in the interpretation of the specified number of content-specific Point-of-Care Ultrasound cases within the last two (2) years:
  1. 30 Cases:
    1. Cardiac
  2. 25 Cases:
    1. Gastrointestinal
    2. Hepatobiliary/Spleen
    3. Obstetrics/First Trimester (a combination of transvaginal and transabdominal)
  3. 20 Cases:
    1. Abdominal Trauma
    2. Lower Extremity Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
    3. Lung
    4. Musculoskeletal (MSK) Soft Tissue
    5. Renal Genitourinary
  4. 15 Cases:
    1. Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)

How to Apply

When you are ready to apply for your POCUS Certification package, please follow these steps:

  1. Log in to MY POCUS to set up your account and to receive your ID number.
  2. Complete the short online application. You will select the certificates and/or certification you wish to earn and attest that you meet the experience prerequisites.
  3. After the application, you may start your assessments immediately.

How to Earn Your POCUS Certification?

  1. Take Your Clinical Case Assessment
    The Clinical Case-Based assessments were developed using a standard template that has been customized for each content area. Clinical scenarios are presented to candidates in audio and/or video formats (with closed-captioning and written scripts). Ultrasound media and assessment questions are presented at key points during the patient encounter.
  2. Submit Peer Evaluation
    When applying for Clinical Certificates, you will be asked to provide the names and email addresses of three clinicians with a clinical background in ultrasound who are familiar with your ability to obtain clinically-relevant content-specific Point-of-Care Ultrasound images. The POCUS Certification Academy™ will contact some or all of these individuals to ask them to complete a short questionnaire regarding their impressions of your Point-of-Care Ultrasound abilities for the chosen clinical area.

You have 180 days to complete all of the on-demand, online Clinical Case Assessments, and Peer Evaluation. The assessment period begins when the voucher code you are provided is entered into the system during your application process for the Certification.
